The relocation of the permanent exhibition entitled “Flora of Andros” to the Agadaki Estate in Patouria – together with the project's Botanic Garden – was successfully completed. The exhibition is open to the public according to the Botanic Garden's visiting schedule. The family of Elli Stamatiadou expresses its gratitude to the Board of Directors of the Kaireios Library for providing the space to highlight Elli’s Mandaraka Stamatiadou work as a collector of 23,000 plants from our country. These collections are archived and form the basis of the collection of the Goulandris Museum of Natural History in Kifissia (Athens). Exhibition entitled “The Sea is a road…”

In the framework of LIFE Andros Park project in June 2022, the Institute of Agricultural Economy and Sociology of ELGO-DIMITRA, organized an action with a group of residents of the island aiming at investigating the relationship between quality of life and marine and coastal environment through photography. The participants were asked to present their photos capturing the relationship between the marine and coastal environment and the quality of life in Andros. From August 26, 2022, the photos of the action are presented in an exhibition entitled “The Sea is a road...”, at the Agadaki Estate of the Kaireios Library located in the village of Apatouria close to Apoikia. Agadaki Estate also hosts the Botanic Garden of Andros, created within the same project.

Inauguration of the Botanic Garden

On Saturday, May 28, 2022, the Botanic Garden of Andros, which was created in the framework of the LIFE Andros Park project, was inaugurated. The Garden is part of the Agadaki Estate (Kaireios Library) located in the village of Apatouria, close to Apoikia. The Agadaki Estate covers an area of ​​about 2 acres and includes an old tower house and an olive mill, which have been completely restored, as well as 11 main terraces which reach the nearby river of constant flow. The terraces are full of old olive trees, citrus and various other fruit trees. Based on the plans made by the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) in collaboration with the Kaireios Library, the Estate was adapted into a Botanic Garden, which hosts more than 150 species of plants…

The Mushroom Garden at the Agadaki Estate has been completed…

Last December, several tree trunks,  previously been inoculated with various species of mushrooms in the Laboratory of General and Agricultural Microbiology of the AUA, were placed in the Botanical Garden (Agadaki Estate, Kairios Library). After several months in the Laboratory to satisfactorily incubate the fungi in the wood, the time has come for them to be transferred to their permanent position, as exhibits of the Botanical Garden to form part of the “mushroom garden” under preparation! Among the species settled in the Botanical Garden are some very well-known, popular, edible or pharmaceutical species, such as Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus), Ganoderma (Ganoderma lucidum and G. resinaceum), the Hoof fungus (Fomes fomentarius), the pharmaceutical Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) and the wood-borne fungus Abortiporus biennis. Alders at Trichonida Lake

The restoration activities in alder stands of Andros performed in the frame of the project did not go unnoticed! In several cases, citizens or stakeholders expressed their interest to apply the methodology developed and used in the project to produce and grow alder seedlings with the purpose of restoring degraded/destroyed alder stands in various localities. One of them concerned the Pantanassa-Mandanissa village lying at the shores of the Trichonida lake at Aitoloakarnania (W. Greece); the local Cultural Society "Pygmaios Trichonios" expressed the interest to restore one of the alder stands at the Trichonida lake. In July 2020, the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA, Laboratories of General and Agricultural Microbiology and Systematic Botany) project team responded by providing guidance and alder seedlings inoculated by associated microorganisms.
